All night rescue of a crew member suffering from occupational accident on a fishing boat in Phu Yen

On 13 May 2023, Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (Vietnam MRCC) received distress information from the fishing vessel named PY 90179 TS: there was 01 crew (Full name: Le Kiet, born in 1985, title: Captain) whose right hand was crushed by an ice crusher, causing a lot of blood loss. The vessel PY 90179 TS was proceeding to Nha Trang for the crew to be timely treated. The Captain requested urgent rescue.

Upon receiving the urgent request, Vietnam MRCC kept regularly direct contact with the vessel PY 90179 TS in order to update the crew's condition as well as provide him initial first aid instructions to ensure his safety; simultaneously, coordinated with relevant local authorities: Phu Yen Provincial Border Guard Command, Phu Yen Provincial Search and Rescue Command, Khanh Hoa Provincial Border Guard Command, High Command of Navy Region IV, Nhatrang Radio for timely support for the crew. Unfortunately, the crew's condition worsens. Faced with an emergency situation that could lead to a very high mortality rate, under the directives of the Vietnam Search and Rescue Committee, the Ministry of Transport, the Vietnam Maritime Administration, Vietnam MRCC mobilized the SAR 273 stationed in Nha Trang and the military doctor of the Khanh Hoa Provincial Border Guard Command to promptly depart for conducting the rescue operation at 12:24 on May 13, 2023.

By 19:28 on May 13, 2023, SAR 273 approached PY 90179 TS and conducted the rescue operations. The weather in the area was affected by local thunderstorms, the distress position was far from shore, making the rescue operations difficult, but with the spirit of urgency, determination, and diligence of the rescue team, after many hours of struggling with the wind and waves at night, they finally received the victim, promptly carried out emergency rescue measures and brought him to the wharf of the Regional Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre No. IV (Nha Trang), and handed him over to the authorities at 03:09 on May 14, 2023.
