At 20:28 P.M on April 17, 2024, the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (the Centre) received a distress call from the vessel ASTERIS, flagged under the Marshall Islands, with the MMSI number 538002772. During the journey from Quang Ninh, Vietnam to Indonesia, when the ship arrived at a position about 85 nautical miles north-northeast of Son Tra Peninsula, Da Nang, there was a Filipino crew member who had sustained severe head injuries from occupational accident, rendering them unconscious. The vessel altered its course towards Danang and urgently requested assistance to evacuate the injured crew member for medical treatment.
Upon receiving this information, the Centre immediately coordinated with the Danang Radio to provide medical guidance and initial first aid instructions for the injured crew member. Simultaneously, the vessel was instructed to proceed to Danang at maximum speed to ensure timely medical support.

Following the directives of Viet Nam Maritime Administration - VINAMARINE, the Centre promptly dispatched the specialized search and rescue vessel SAR 412, stationed in Danang, to conduct the rescue operation.

By 00:12 A.M on April 18, 2024, the maritime rescue team had reached the vessel ASTERIS. The rescue team of SAR 412 and medical staff from Da Nang Emergency Centre 115 were deployed to distressed vessel to provide medical first aid to the injured crew member. Unfortunately, due to the severity of the head injury, the crew member did not survive.

At 04:18 A.M on April 18, 2024, SAR 412 docked at the Da Nang MRCC’s port, where the deceased crew member was handed over to the relevant authorities and the representative of the vessel's owner in Vietnam, as per regulations./.
