At 15:00 P.M on 05 June, 2023, Regional Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre No.IV (Nha Trang MRCC) received the distress information that Mr. Tzamalis Spyridon, the Greek Captain of vessel TAMPA was suffering from cough, fever, breathing difficulty, high heart rate and high blood pressure. The vessel decided to alter its course to Nha Trang for timely medical treatment.
Upon receiving an urgent rescue request from the vessel TAMPA and its agent, Nha Trang MRCC kept contact with the vessel, regularly updated the crew’s condition, provided him medical consultant, simultaneously, coordinated with local relevant authorities: The Maritime Administration of Nha Trang, Nha Trang Port Border Guard Station, Khanh Hoa International Health Quarantine Center, Khanh Hoa Border Guard Command to support the vessel TAMPA to Khanh Hoa’s waters.
The Captain of the vessel TAMPA's condition worsened, with high blood pressure (200/100), difficulty breathing, requiring intervention with oxygen tanks, and signs of loss of consciousness. Under the directives of the Vietnam Search and Rescue Committee (VINASARCOM), the Ministry of Transport and the Vietnam Maritime Administration, Nhatrang MRCC dispatched SAR 273 to promptly conduct the rescue operation.
The high freeboard of TAMPA, along with the southwest wind and local thunderstorms, made it difficult for the rescue team to receive and transfer the Captain who was in critical condition onto SAR 273. With the spirit of diligence and professionalism of the maritime rescue team, by 9:30 p.m. on June 5, 2023, SAR 273 successfully transferred the Captain to Vinmec Nha Trang International General Hospital for medical treatment.
