Timely Mobilization of Foreign Vessel Rescues 11 Fishermen from Sunken Fishing Boat

19/06/2025

At 09:10 AM on June 19, 2025, the Vietnam MRCC (the Centre), which is under the Vietnam Maritime and Waterways Administration - Ministry of Construction, received an urgent report from the VINASARCOM regarding a serious maritime incident. The fishing boat QN 80058 TS capsized by heavy waves approximately 13–15 nautical miles north of Bach Long Vi Island. Initial reports indicated that the area was experiencing level 5–6 winds and wave heights exceeding 2 meters. In these treacherous conditions, 11 fishermen who were drifting at sea faced life-threatening danger.

Vietnam MRCC took a swift response to SAR operations

Upon receiving the distress alert, the Centre immediately initiated emergency protocols such as ordering the Coastal Radio Station to broadcast distress signals to vessels operating in nearby waters, calling for urgent support in locating and rescuing 11 missing fishermen. With the authorization of the VINASARCOM, the Centre mobilized multiple assets, including: 01 Coast Guard vessel (CSB 2005), 01 Navy ship (HQ 85), 08 fishing boats and nearby merchant ships.

Vessels operating in the area where QN 80058 TS went down.

In addition, the Centre contacted foreign vessels operating in the vicinity. The cargo ship STARSHIP TAURUS (flagged Marshall Islands and en route from Ulsan Port - South Korea to Hai Phong Port – Vietnam) responded immediately to the call for assistance. At 11:30 AM, STARSHIP TAURUS successfully located the 11 fishermen approximately 10 nautical miles northwest of the reported sinking site. Under the coordination and guidance of the Centre, the ship approached and safely rescued all individuals, bringing them aboard to administer medical care. The vessel is expected to arrive at VIP GREEN PORT in Hai Phong at 5:30 PM on the same day, where the rescued crew will be handed over to local authorities for further assistance and medical evaluation.

STARSHIP TAURUS (Marshall Islands) actively participated in the SAR mission and successfully saved all 11 distressed fishermen in time.

This successful operation highlights the efficiency and responsiveness of Vietnam’s maritime search and rescue system. It also underscores the importance of international maritime cooperation in emergency situations at sea.

Moving forward, the Centre will continue to monitor the situation closely and coordinate with relevant agencies to ensure full support for the rescued fishermen. The Centre remains committed to regularly conducting outreach and training activities to raise safety awareness among seafarers and fishermen. Emphasis is placed on strict adherence to maritime safety regulations and maintaining a spirit of mutual assistance in emergency scenarios.
