At 23:36 on March 2, 2023, Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (Vietnam MRCC) received distress information: Crude oil tanker named MARAN THETIS (Nationality: Greece; IMO number: 9421427) was underway from China to Singapore, when passing through the sea area with position: 13022’N- 110053’E, (120 nautical miles northeast of Nha Trang), there was 01 crew member on board with a life-threatening illness (Full name: DROZD OLEKSII, 62 years old - Nationality: UKRAINE - Title: Mechanic). The captain requested urgent rescue.

Upon receiving the information, Vietnam MRCC immediately provided remote medical consultation and initial first aid instructions to the crew to ensure his life’s safety. Unfortunately, the crew's condition worsened due to severe pain, swollen legs and poor health that could lead to a high risk of death. Under the directives of the Ministry of Transport and the Vietnam Maritime Administration, Vietnam MRCC mobilized the specialized search and rescue vessel SAR 273 stationed in Nha Trang with the medical team to promptly conduct the rescue operations, simultaneously guided the MARAN THETIS alter its course back to shore.

Through bad weather with Northeast wind level 6, rough sea, SAR 273 timely approached the vessel MARAN THETIS. The medical team along with the coordinating forces including the Khanh Hoa Provincial International Medical Quarantine Center; Khanh Hoa Provincial Border Guard Command; Representative of the agent in Vietnam urgently carried out initial examination and diagnosis.

At 09:50 on March 3, 2023, the crew Drozd Oleksii was brought to the port of the Regional Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre No. IV (Nhatrang MRCC) and transferred to the hospital for treatment.
