At 17:57 on 28 September, 2023, the vessel named DHT SUNDARBANS was en route from Huizhou port, China to Singapore at the position: 16º51’ N – 113º30 E, when a severe occupational accident occurred. A Filipino crew named Rallos Rory Jerome, born in 1972, fell and hit his head on a metal wall, causing him to be unconscious, suspected to be suffering from a traumatic brain injury. The captain assessed that the victim was severely injured, possibly with a brain hemorrhage; therefore, he urgently notified the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre- Vietnam MRCC (under the command of Vietnam Maritime Administration - Ministry of Transport) through its agent Asiatrans Vietnam, requesting Vietnam MRCC to conduct urgent rescue operations.
Upon receiving the distress information, Vietnam MRCC immediately requested the vessel to alter its course toward Da Nang, simultaneously coordinated with relevant authorities to deploy the rescue plan.
Due to the extremely critical condition of the DHT Sundarbans crew, at 09:51 on September 29, 2023, Vietnam MRCC urgently dispatched SAR 412 to carry out the rescue operation. To handle the severe injury, the Da Nang City Emergency Center sent a medical team with equipment onboard SAR 412 to carry out the rescue operations.
By 10:57 on the same day, the rescue team had reached the vessel DHT Sundarbans, doctors and rescue team immediately were deployed to DHT Sundarbans to provide medical first aid to the injured crew member. The victim was then transferred to SAR 412 for specialist medical care and was urgently taken to the mainland for further medical treatment. With the efforts and dedication of the medical team and rescue team, the victim initially overcame the critical condition and saved his life.
At 12:45 on the same day, the victim Rallos Rory Jerome was safely brought to Danang and handed over to relevant authorities. The ambulance of Vinmec Da Nang Hospital received the victim and took him to the hospital for medical treatment./.
